13 Folds of the American Flag

First Fold-Life

The first fold is a symbol of life.

Second Fold-Eternal Life

The second fold represents our belief in eternal life.

Third Fold-Remembrance

The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran who departed our ranks and gave a portion of his or her life in defense of our country and the cause of peace throughout the world.

Fourth Fold-Our Weaker Nature

The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, we turn to Him in times of peace as well as times of war for His divine guidance.

Fifth Fold-Our Country

The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the works attributed to Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong."

Sixth Fold-Our Hearts

The sixth fold represents where our hearts lie. It is with our hearts that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands.

Seventh Fold

The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, who protect our country and our flag against enemies, whether found within or beyond the boundaries of our Republic.

Eighth Fold-The Brave

The eighth fold is a tribute to those who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.

Ninth Fold-Womanhood and Mothers

The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood and mothers, for through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion, the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.

Tenth Fold-Fathers

The tenth fold is a tribute to fathers, who have also given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first born.

Eleventh Fold-Hebrew Tradition

The eleventh fold traditionally represents, in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Twelfth Fold-Christian Tradition

The twelfth fold traditionally represents, in the eyes of Christian citizens, and emblem of eternity and glorifies God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Thirteenth Fold-In God We Trust

The thirteenth and final fold, when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our National Motto, "In God We Trust." After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it has the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the sailors and Marines who served under Capt. John Paul Jones and were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the U.S. Armed Forces, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.
